Censorship History Lesson at Film Forum
New York's Film Forum will be hosting Paramount Before the Code, June 24th to July 21st. This is a collection of sound films made at Paramount before imposition of the Production Code that began industry-wide self-censorship in 1934. The Alternative Film Guide has more (Paramount Before the Code). The self-censorship was imposed, as usual, due to fears of government censorship. Indeed, numerous local censorship boards were formed before the code was established. At this film festival, you'll get to see what would become unproduceable a few years later. What classics never were because of such government-induced censorship? What are we losing because of today's government-induced self-censorship? via Cinema Minima
