No Surprise: Censorship Groups Not Happy With ".XXX"
Seth Finkelstein continues his commentary on ICANN's new ".xxx" top level domain by pointing out the condemnation from various censorship organizations (Censors Against Dot-XXX Domain).
When notable censors are saying very loudly, essentially, "THIS WON'T HELP US CENSOR", so they don't want it, I tend to think that's useful to know. It's not dispositive. But a good rule of thumb all the same.
I'm not so surprised, actually. These sorts of organizations don't raise more funds and get attention by saying how things are getting better. Obviously, we can't know, but were it possible to peek into a parallel universe in which ".xxx" was rejected by ICANN we would likely be seeing complaints that ICANN didn't even want to create a voluntary red light district. It's always getting worse for these groups. Plus, it positions them perfectly for calling for the system to be made mandatory.
